He was born in Neuchatel, Switzerland and he was the oldest in his family. He wrote his first published scientific paper when he was 10. He was 15 when he wrote a paper on mollusks that gained him international recognition. He went to the University of Neuchatel where he studied zoology. He earned his doctorate in1918, then he became interested in psychology, and studied psychoanalysis for a semester under Carl Gustav Jung at the University of Zurich. He moved to Paris so he could teach at an all boy school. That is his early life.
